Liump! Slowly FlashingProject for a group exhibition
„L'Étreinte – Embracement – Glamonė“
Laurynas Skeisgiela's series of slowly blinking objects is based on the natural phenomenon of mimicry - a widespread protective strategy, which has evolved in a way that allows organisms to mimic the appearance of other creatures and environments. Color and shape, in particular, are usually the most effective means to convey or be protected from danger, be it real or false. Our built environment often uses similar mechanisms to signal danger in signs of warning and important emergency situations, such as fire escape signs. Bright synthetic colors and abstract forms can be seen hanging in the corridors of public spaces, designed to efficiently guide us through space in instances of emergency or to control our movements for safety and security. Titled Liump!, this object series camouflages these signs, replacing warning signals with eye-catching, attractive shapes, stripping signs associated with the emergency of their function, and turning them into extravagant decorative interior pieces.
